The UNU Institute in Macau (UNU Macau) is one of 13 specialized research and training institutes within the UNU system. This institute focuses on the intersection of digital technology and sustainable development, conducting research that is both policy-relevant and solution-oriented. Position Overview: Research Fellow – Generative AI and Education
We are seeking a Research Fellow focused on Generative AI and Education to assist with various aspects of research and outreach initiatives under the director’s supervision. As a vital part of our team, you will play a crucial role in planning, coordinating, and marketing research activities that revolve around generative AI’s implications for education. Your responsibilities will include:
- Research Exploration: Conducting in-depth research on diverse topics related to generative AI and its applications in educational settings.
- Literature Reviews: Drafting comprehensive literature reviews based on focused research topics.
- Collaborative Writing: Collaboratively drafting blog posts with fellow researchers and experts on various themes relevant to generative AI in education.
- Tool Testing: Experimenting with generative AI tools to support and enhance the research process.
- Book Production Support: Assisting in the production of a book on generative AI and education for Springer Nature’s UNU AI and Sustainability series. This will involve:
- Preparing a compelling book proposal.
- Gathering topics, planning writing timelines, and identifying experts.
- Conducting research on each topic while regularly discussing progress.
- Coordinating contributions from chapter authors to ensure timely submissions and enrich the content with a UN perspective.
- Liaising with Springer Nature to ensure compliance throughout the publication process.
- Webinar Organization: Planning and executing webinars on generative AI and education, including:
- Identifying and reaching out to speakers.
- Coordinating with speakers on content delivery.
- Creating marketing materials and summarizing blog articles post-webinar.
- Engaging speakers to contribute to the book.
- Conference Participation: Researching relevant conferences where we can present our findings.
- Grant Applications: Actively seeking research grants and collaboratively developing proposals on various topics.
- Collaborative Proposals: Developing research proposals with partners, such as the Ministry of Education, under the UNU Global AI Network.
- Panel Preparation: Preparing for a panel session at the 2025 UNU Macau AI Conference on Generative AI and Education.
- Conference Support: Assisting the UNU Macau team in preparing for the AI conference.
- Other Duties: Performing additional tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
Learning Objectives
Interns will refine their research skills, conduct focused investigations into generative AI and education, and test various generative AI tools within educational contexts. Participants will enhance their event organization capabilities, learn to coordinate with experts, and promote research outcomes effectively. Additionally, interns will improve their planning, organizing competencies, and professional skills while managing complex and interconnected tasks. They will strengthen their written and oral communication skills in English, and develop teamwork abilities through collaboration with stakeholders across disciplines and geographies.

Qualifications
Education:
Candidates should possess university studies in disciplines such as educational technology, communications, computer science, AI, digital media, social sciences, or related fields with a strong research background.
Technical Skills:
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel) and design software is required, along with expertise in prompt engineering with generative AI tools.
Enrollment Status:
Candidates must be enrolled in a graduate degree program (Master’s or Doctoral) or be within two years of graduation from a bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD program.
Language Proficiency:
Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English are essential.
Stipend:
Interns without financial support from other institutions will receive a stipend to partially cover basic daily expenses such as meals, transportation, and internet costs during the internship. The monthly stipend for full-time placements will be MOP $5102.63, with part-time arrangements adjusted accordingly.
Contract Duration:
The internship will last for six months, with an expected start date of March 2025, or earlier if possible.
