Fully Funded: John Allwright Fellowship Program [Study in Australia]

The John Allwright Fellowship (JAF) is a prestigious scholarship initiative designed specifically for scientists and economists from ACIAR partner countries who are currently or have recently participated in ACIAR research projects. The program offers a unique opportunity to gain formal postgraduate qualifications at esteemed Australian tertiary institutions. The primary objective of the Fellowship is to enhance scientific research capabilities and strengthen institutional collaborations in ACIAR partner countries, ultimately leading to high-quality and impactful research.

As the largest investment within the ACIAR Capacity Development Program, the JAF provides scholarships for either a Master by Research or a PhD to agricultural researchers, facilitated through the Australia Awards system. Beyond academic support, ACIAR offers additional pastoral care and development opportunities aimed at enhancing the diverse and transferable skills of participants throughout their scholarship experience. This support plays a crucial role in helping fellows transition effectively between their studies and subsequent career stages.

Currently, there are 39 John Allwright Fellows enrolled across 15 universities in Australia, contributing to a rich diversity of research endeavors.

Commitment to Gender Equity

In its Gender Equity Policy and Strategy (2017–2022), ACIAR has set a strong commitment to achieving gender parity within its Capacity Development Program by 2020. As part of this initiative, women now represent at least 50% of the new JAF recipients, reflecting a significant step toward inclusivity and empowerment in research.

Addressing Climate Change

Agriculture, fisheries, and food systems are at the forefront of challenges posed by climate change, especially in the Indo-Pacific region, which is among the most vulnerable globally. As the world population grows, the need for food and agricultural products continues to rise. Meeting future demands sustainably requires significant advancements in climate-resilient agricultural practices, alongside reinforced market systems and governance structures.

Acknowledging this urgent requirement, the JAF program is setting aside specific places in the 2026 intake for research dedicated to climate change, climate adaptation, or enhancing resilience against climate-related impacts. All applicants are encouraged to explore how their proposed research and action plans will address climate-related issues.

Award Conditions

An award offer is valid for the Australian academic year immediately following the calendar year in which the offer is made. Those who accept a JAF Scholarship are required to enter into a contract with the Commonwealth of Australia, agreeing to adhere to the conditions outlined in the scholarship.

Following the completion of their scholarship, recipients are obligated to leave Australia for a minimum of two years. If this condition is not met, scholars will incur a debt equating to the total cost associated with their scholarship.

Fellowship Benefits

The JAF is granted for the minimum necessary duration required for the individual to complete the specified academic program at an Australian higher education institution, which may include preparatory training. The benefits generally include:

  • Full Tuition Fees: Coverage of all tuition costs associated with the degree.
  • Return Air Travel: Provision of a single return economy-class airfare to and from Australia using the most direct route.
  • Establishment Allowance: A one-time payment to assist with accommodation costs, textbooks, and study materials.

Additional Features of the JAF Program

Pursuing a Master by Research or PhD is a significant endeavor. To enrich the experience of JAF scholars studying in Australia, ACIAR offers additional support through the following initiatives:

  • JAF Support Facility (JSF): Offering tailored support throughout the scholarship journey, including pastoral care and networking opportunities, provided in collaboration with the University of New England (UNE).
  • Alumni Network: Upon completing their scholarship, fellows automatically join the ACIAR Alumni cohort, benefiting from continued networking and learning opportunities that leverage expertise within the alumni community.
