Roster for Editors / Writers (English and Chinese languages)
UNU Macau invites highly motivated and committed local and international experts with relevant experience in editing / writing for project-based assignments supporting editorial outputs and publications of the Institute.
The offsite Writers/Editors support the Institute by drafting, editing, and compiling a variety of written products, including communications materials, grant proposals, and academic outputs in English or Chinese. Responsibilities of the Writers/Editors include the followings:
1. Produce written outputs for the Institute as per instructions
- Complete written tasks either in English and Chinese with grammatical precision, proper formatting, and adherence to house style and required standards
- Craft impactful speeches and keynotes in collaboration with Institute personnel to for high-profile events and official purposes
- Prepare draft and constantly review upon feedback
2. Content review
- Edit diverse outputs, such as but not limited to, scholarly articles, policy documents, reports, and specialized communications, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and coherence throughout
- Revise unclear or incorrect text
- Cross-check references and bibliographies to meet specific submission guidelines
3. Research dissemination
- Work closely with researchers and authors to uphold the integrity and accuracy of the academic outputs
- Draft, edit, and design research dissemination products in line with UNU-Macau, UNU, and UN style guidelines
4. Support across units
- Provide editorial support to various units within the Institute

Qualifications
Education and certification
- Bachelor’s degree or above in languages studies (English or Chinese), journalism, Communications, literature or a related field.
Experience
Required
- At least five (5) years of professional experience as writer/editor, preferably in an academic and/or international setting.
- Knowledge of academic writing and formal publishing — competencies, requirements, protocols.
- Outstanding command of written English language or in Chinese language.
- Professional experience in copy-editing scholarly, policy, or other types of writing for diverse audiences.
- Experience in drafting reports, communications, presentations, and gathering statistics is required.
- Strong attention to details and excellent proofreading skills.
- Working knowledge and experience using MS Office. Working knowledge of anti-plagiarism detection software, Framemaker, LaTeX, and EndNote would be an advantage.
- Ability to multi-task work with minimal supervision, and often times none relying on own judgement and subject matter expertise/experience, with a high level of resilience. A keen eye for detail and problem-solving.
- Knowledge of the UN systems is an advantage; previous experience of working in international development organizations would be an asset.
Language Requirements:
- English editors/writers need to be exceptionally fluent in both written and verbal English
- Chinese editors/writers need to be exceptionally fluent in both written and verbal Chinese
- Knowledge of Cantonese is an asset.
Selection process:
Individual will be evaluated according to the following:
Stage 1: Establishing a Roster:
• All applicants will be screened against the minimum requirements specified above for inclusion on a long list.
• Long-listed applicants will be evaluated through a desk review and/or interview against the following criteria based on evidence in the submitted application:
- Academic qualifications
- Relevant professional experience
- Demonstrated competencies
Successful candidates will be included in the UNU-Macau Experts Roster for a period of 2 years.
Inclusion in the roster does not guarantee a contract with UNU Macau.
Stage 2: Contracting:
When a request for services arises, the Institute shall contact relevant individual(s) with the Terms of Reference, work requirement and dates of the assignment seeking confirmation of availability.
Remuneration
Remuneration will be commensurate with experience and based on the work capacity and schedule of delivery. This contract carries no entitlement to paid annual leave nor sick leave.
Duration of contract
General conditions of contracts for the service of consultants apply. Consultants will not hold international civil servant status nor be a ‘staff member’ as defined in the United Nations Staff Rules and Regulations.
Consultants engaged by UNU may not provide services for more than twenty-four months of accrued service within a period of thirty-six month calendar months.
