The Africa Health Research Institute’s vision is optimal health and well-being of under-resourced populations.

The Africa Health Research Institute (also known as AHRI) is an independent, transdisciplinary scientific research institute based across two campuses in the province of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) in South Africa. AHRI’s research combines population, basic, social, and medical sciences to understand and intervene in the health and well-being of South African communities.

AHRI works in partnership with local communities and South African academic, governmental and other policy stakeholders. We emphasise training of the next generation of African scientists. AHRI collaborates with over 60 institutions globally.

The work lives of AHRI’s ~500 scientists, students and staff members are driven by our values: ubuntu, transformation, leadership, innovation, excellence and collaboration.

ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP

The Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) is recruiting an Informatics Intern to join the Sigal Lab. The Informatics Intern will work with large datasets generated through multiple research projects.

The incumbent will learn and perform data sourcing, wrangling, cleaning, biostatical analyses, and database upkeep. The incumbent will contribute to building capacity in bioinformatics and big data analytics.

The incumbent will be eligible to apply to the University College London degree program in accordance with AHRI policies at time of application following the one-year internship (to be confirmed).

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Honours degree in Health Data Science or Bioinformatics with a final mark of 70% or above.

Minimum Experience

  1. A strong foundation in mathematics
  2. Good skills in computer programming, with experience of at least one high-level programming language (e.g. Python/R)
