The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) invites applications for the Bursary Programme 2024.

Closing Date: 30 November 2023

Applicants who do not comply with the below-mentioned instruction/ requirements, as applications received late will not be considered.


The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy is a unit of the South African government.

Aim: To develop a mineral resources and energy sector that promotes economic growth and development, social equity and environmental sustainability.

Vision: A leader in the transformation of South Africa through economic growth and sustainable development in the mining and energy sectors.
Mission: To regulate, transform and promote the minerals and energy sectors, providing sustainable and affordable energy for growth and development, and ensuring that all South Africans derive sustainable benefit from the country’s mineral wealth.


The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) is facilitating full time bursaries for the academic year 2024.

The bursary is targeting eligible South African scholars from disadvantaged social backgrounds currently doing or have completed grade 12.

The bursary recipients should be studying towards mining or energy related fields preferably in the following disciplines:

  • Bachelor of Science (Physics and Chemistry) 
  • Chemical Engineering  
  • Electrical Engineering (Heavy Current) 
  • Electro-Mechanical/ Mechatronics Engineering
  • Environmental Health and Management

  • Geology
  • Industrial Engineering
  • Materials Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Metallurgical Engineering (Extractive) 

  • Mining Engineering
  • Mining Survey
  • Nuclear Engineering
  • Rock Engineering


  • Bursaries are available to South African Citizens that are financially needy and deserving applicants from rural areas as the are faced with limited opportunities.
  • These bursaries are aimed at enhancing transformation of the mining and energy sectors.

  • The bursary is only available to applicants who want to pursue their studies at a South African University or University of Technology
  • First preference will be given to first year students and bursary is NOT available to applicants who wish to pursue a post-graduate qualification.

  • Please note that the bursary is for full time studies only and the bursary agreements will only be entered into with successful applicants for the 2024 academic year who will register for full time
    studies. It will be required of successful applicants to provide confirmation of being unemployed at the time of signing the bursary agreement.

  • The awarding of the bursary is the sole discretion of the DMRE, and communication will only be entered into with a pre-selected candidate(s). The Department reserves the right to any preselected candidate(s).



  1. Ensure that the form is completed in full by using BLOCK LETTERS and mark appropriate
    boxes with an X.
  2. Please note that the form is 7 pages long, ensure you fill and initial each page.
  3. 2024 Bursary application forms can be downloaded from www.dmre.gov.za
  4. Please attach certified copies of documents as per the checklist
  5. Please attach motivation for the bursary and any supporting documents as per section E
  6. Applicants with less than level 6 in pure Mathematics and Science will not be considered.

Closing date for the applications is 30 November 2023. Should you NOT be contacted on or before the 31 January 2024 consider your application to be unsuccessful.

High school applicants are encouraged to send final matric results and final acceptance letters within the first week of the release of matric results.

First preference will be given to females and applicants with disabilities.
