Impala Platinum (Implats) SHEQ Department is hiring and invites applications for the vacancy: Environmental Officer.

PURPOSE OF THE JOB: To maintain or improve environmental performance on an operational level and ensure compliance to environmental legislation and standards.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Relevant NQF level 7 qualification in Environmental- Science or Management essential.
  • ISO 14001 lead auditor certification will be an advantage.
  • A minimum of 3 to 5 years experience in Environmental Management Systems (EMS), calibration of equipment, refining processes, and relevant legislation.

  • Sound knowledge of environmental software packages, sampling techniques and environmental instrumentation monitoring.

  • Knowledge of environmental legislation, impact studies, audit processes and project management principles.
  • Must have good communication-; planning and organising; problem-solving- and presentation skills.

  • Strong analytical skills must be detail conscious with sound computer literacy i.e., Microsoft Office.
  • Medically fit for PMR and BMR.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Promote and manage the environmental management system (ISO 14000) in the respective areas by chairing meetings, writing newsletters, conduct training and awareness campaigns and the administration of different systems i.e. Isometrix, Opsis and other software systems.

  • Assist with the management of the air pollution monitoring equipment (Opsis and Ambient stations)
  • Investigate environmental complaints and incidents, liaise with plant and provide feedback to complainant.

  • Assist with the monitoring of waste, water, and air management plans.
  • Provide assistance during vendor audits and perform internal environmental audits and contractor environmental site audits.

  • Advise during project design and HAZOP on environmental risks.
  • Ensure data management of environmental requirements for projects on the capital plan.

  • Manage the borehole sampling and assist during stack sampling.
  • Perform community noise monitoring and finalise subsequent reports.

  • Communicate process changes and deviations.
  • Update and monitor aspects, objectives and targets.
