122 jobs created as Shoprite and Checkers open stores at same mall in KwaZulu-Natal  

In a first for KwaZulu-Natal, a Checkers and a Shoprite store opened on the same day, in the same mall in Tongaat last week.   

The new Checkers in oThongathi Mall is the first to open in the area and has created 42 job opportunities, whilst the mall’s new Shoprite supermarket – the second in town – created jobs for 80 people.   

Checkers Tongaat offers customers access to several in-store fresh food departments including a Meat Market with free range chicken and restaurant-quality steak, Fish Shop, Hot & Cold Foods Deli, Bakery with artisan bread, Fresh Fruit & Vegetables, Wine section, and Coffee Bar.  

At the Shoprite supermarket, customers can look forward to the same everyday low prices the retailer is known for, with the new store catering for all customers’ daily, weekly and monthly food and household requirements, including a Meat Market, Hot and Cold Foods Deli, Bakery, and fresh Fruit & Vegetables. 

The Checkers has a total of 14 pay points, including three express tills, with the Shoprite boasting 15 pay points, including four express tills for a convenient shopping experience. 

Customers at either supermarket can also save time by making use of an in-store Money Market counter. Services include money transfers, buying lotto tickets, paying municipal bills, topping up data, airtime or electricity, purchasing gift cards or savings stamps, and buying bus, airline or event tickets. 

Trading hours at both supermarkets are Mondays to Sundays from 08:00 – 20:00.
