2023 W&RSETA Bursary Programme
Applications are now open for the the Wholesale and Retail Sector Education and Training Authority (W&RSETA) Bursary Programme 2023.
Closing date: 17 March 2023
The Wholesale and Retail Sector Education and Training Authority (W&RSETA) invites all public and private TVET and HET institutions, bursary administrators and Retail Chairs to apply for bursaries for retail and related qualifications.
Preference will be given to students studying qualifications that address the Sector Priority Skills and Hard-to-Fill Vacancies as listed in the Sector Skills Plan 2022/23 and below:
- Management: Retail General Manager / Key Account Manager / Corporate Services Manager / Sales Director / Small Business Manager
- Supervisor: Retail Supervisor
- Professional: Retail Buyer, SHE&Q (Safety, Health, Environment and Quality) Practitioner, ICT Security Specialist, Marketing Practitioner
- Trade and Technical: Blockman/Butcher, Confectionary Baker, Chef, ICT Programmers, Developers or Data Scientists, Nail technician, Beauty Therapist
- General: Industrial Products Sales Representative
The following related qualifications will also be considered:
- Food Technology / Food Security
- Supply Chain Management
- Logistics Management
- Financial Accounting / Management
- Human Resources
- Credit Management
- Operations Management
- Clothing Technology / Production
- Retail Pharmacy
- Office Administration
- Business Management / Administration
- Visual Merchandising
Qualifying Academic Programmes:
Applications for academic programmes (higher certificate, degree and diploma) that address the skills at NQF levels 5-7 indicated above will be considered for unemployed students, as well as NCV Levels
2-4 and NATED N4-N6 qualifications at TVET colleges.
Qualifying Entities / Institutions:
The following institutions are eligible to apply for bursary funding:
- Public HETIs and TVET colleges
- Private HETIs and TVET colleges
- Bursary service providers/administrators
- Retail chairs
Submission Requirements:
- Institutions must submit the following documentation to the provincial office to conclude their application as proof of registration and programme accreditation:
- SAQA registration number for the academic programme/qualification
- CHE registration approval letter for institution offering programme
- DHET registration certificate for institution offering programme
- Successful institutions will be expected to enter into an agreement with the W&RSETA for the duration of the study period of the funded students.
- Institutions must provide the W&RSETA with the following documents upon the acceptance of the Award Letter to confirm the allocation:
- List of selected students
- Cost schedule per course and student
- Proof / confirmation of registration at the institution
- Bursary agreement (signed between student and the W&RSETA)
- Certified copies of identity documents of the students (not older than 6 months)
- Institutions will be responsible for the recruitment and registration of qualifying students on the W&RSETA Management Information System (MIS).
Bursary Beneficiaries:
- South African citizens (below 35 years)
- Accepted or registered with the institution in relation to the study areas listed above
Application Process:
- Applications must be made on-line via the stakeholder portal on the W&RSETA website: www.wrseta.org.za
- Institutions are requested to obtain an application number (N Number) from the relevant provincial office to access the portal if first time applicants.
- Institutions are requested to create profiles/accounts on the W&RSETA Management Information System (MIS) via the MIS Stakeholder Login portal if first time applicants.
- The provincial offices will provide guidance through this process.
- The requested documentation and a comprehensive costing schedule must be submitted to the provincial office where the institution is based by the deadline date.
- All applications must be submitted online by no later than 17 March 2023.

Tuition fees: Full fees as prescribed by the institution.
Accommodation: Must be a recognised/registered residence at capped rates
Book Allowance: Cost of books as recommended by the institution. Includes stationery, printing, data and electronic devices as prescribed by the institution.
Meals: Capped at R16 000 per annum and will be paid to the institution.
Transport: To be determined/confirmed by the institution.
Funding will be awarded at the discretion of the W&RSETA, based on the order of application and availability of funds.
Funding will be awarded to students for the 2023 academic year and successful bursars must be registered on the W&RSETA MIS from 1 March – 31 May 2023.
All claims will be processed after bursar registrations are approved by the W&RSETA on the MIS system.
