National Museum in Bloemfontein: Presidential Stimulus Internship Programme 2022/2023

The National Museum, Bloemfontein invites applications for the following positions:

PESP3 INTERNSHIPS at OLIEWENHUIS ART MUSEUM
2x FULL TIME FIXED TERM VACANCIES (4 Months)

Oliewenhuis Art Museum (satellite of the National Museum, Bloemfontein), is one of the selected host organisations for the Presidential Stimulus Programme 3 (PESP3).

The Internship Programme is managed by The Artbank of South Africa, and supported by The Department of Sport, Arts & Culture.

We are recruiting young people involved in creative arts sector to apply for the Internship Programme.

Oliewenhuis Art Museum is seeking dedicated, motivated, and detail-oriented recent graduates to gain work experience in art administration, collection management (including conservation) and activity and event organising are eligible for this internship.

The appointed candidates will be required to specifically assist with curatorial and collection related administration and organisation, but as this internship is a hands-on skills development programme, interns will be required to assist all Oliewenhuis Art Museum staff with the diverse tasks relating to an art museum.

Successful candidates will be appointed on a fixed term contract for 4 months and will work full time during the week and will occasionally be required to work after-hours and on weekends and Public Holidays.

Successful candidates will be expected to start working December 2022. Please note that only applications from Free State residents will be considered.

Requirements

  • Recent graduate with a Visual Art/ Fine Art qualification (minimum Diploma).
  • Excellent knowledge and experience working with MS Office and knowledge and experience of the Adobe design package will be an advantage.

  • Graphic Design/ web development/ photography/ videography will be an advantage and must be clearly indicated on CV.

  • Must be able to plan, implement and report on a variety of activities with meticulous attention to detail.

  • Must be willing and able to focus on repetitive administrative tasks, including filing, and creating/ updating registers and lists.

  • The ability to work under pressure and keeping to tight deadlines as well as prioritization of work without compromising standards.

  • Practical knowledge and / or experience of visual art and heritage would be an advantage.

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to communicate in English (speaking Sotho would be an advantage).
  • Fair presentation skills

  • Enthusiasm and a willingness to learn.

Key Performance Areas

  • Assist Curator and Collections Manager with arts administration and collection management. This includes assisting with administering of heritage assets and attending to preventative conservation schedules and housekeeping of various storages.

  • Assist Curator and Collections Manager with art exhibitions. This includes assisting with unpacking or taking artworks out of storerooms, installing and de-installing of exhibitions handling delicate artefacts with the necessary care.

  • Assist with project management and arrangement of all Oliewenhuis Art Museum related events and activities.

  • Assist with Art Museum Guide duties when necessary. This includes ensuring the safety and security of all artworks on display and interacting with visitors.

  • Compile monthly reports and create a portfolio of evidence for projects and assignments conducted.
