Named after Major-General Georges P. Vanier, the first francophone Governor General of Canada, the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship (Vanier CGS) program helps Canadian institutions attract highly qualified doctoral students from both Canada and the international community.

About the Vanier Graduate Scholarship

The Government of Canada launched the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) program in 2008 to strengthen Canada’s ability to attract and retain world-class doctoral students and establish Canada as a global centre of excellence in research and higher learning.

Vanier Scholars demonstrate leadership skills and a high standard of scholarly achievement in graduate studies in the social sciences and humanities, natural sciences and/or engineering and health.

Benefits

Each Scholarship is valued at $50,000 per year for three years during doctoral studies.

Up to 166 Vanier scholarships are awarded annually. A total of up to 500 scholarships are active at any time.

Eligibility criteria

Canadian citizens may apply.

Permanent residents of Canada may also apply.

Foreign citizens who are are also welcome to apply for thus scholarship opportunity.

Areas of research applicable are: Health research, Natural sciences and/or engineering, Social sciences and humanities

The selection criteria considers three equally weighted selection criteria: Academic Excellence, Research Potential, and Leadership (potential and demonstrated ability).

Deadline For Students: Consult nominating institution for submission deadline.

For nominating institutions: Deadline: November 1, 2022 (20:00 EDT).

Note that this funding opportunity is being posted in advance of the application period. Participants will be able to apply to this opportunity as of June 30, 2022.

Candidates must be nominated by a Canadian institution with a quota* to host Vanier scholars. Candidates should only seek a nomination from the institution at which they want to study.

*The term “quota” refers to the maximum number of nominations an institution can forward to the national competition.
