The University of Pretoria (UP) in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation (MCF) is currently offering scholarships for high achieving African students interested in studying at postgraduate levels, and applications are invited.

About this opportunity
The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program (MCFSP) targets academically talented yet economically disadvantaged young people in Africa who will contribute to the transformation of the continent through their knowledge, skills, attitudes and values evidenced by their leadership.
Community service and internships are essential components of the Program. The MCFSP offers a full scholarship to selected students who have been provisionally admitted to study towards a postgraduate degree at UP.
Graduates must return to their home countries on completion of their studies and give back to their communities.
The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program is a 10-year, $500 million global initiative to educate and develop next generation leaders who will contribute to social and economic transformation.
The Program enables young people from economically disadvantaged communities to complete quality secondary and university education, and make successful transitions to further education or careers in their home countries.
Through comprehensive support, Scholars receive learning opportunities that equip them with knowledge, skills, and values needed to succeed in the economy, and make positive impacts in their communities.
Benefits
The University of Pretoria Mastercard Scholarship 2023 in Africa is a fully-funded scholarship to undertake postgraduate degree at one of Africa’s top universities.
The scholarship detail is given below:
- Full tuition fee
- Expenses for accommodation
- Maintenance will be provided.
- Students will be encouraged to participate in work-based placements and mentorship activities.
Eligibility criteria
- For an undergraduate (bachelor’s) degree, candidates must be 29 years old or under at the time they apply.
- For a graduate (master’s) degree, candidates must be 35 years old or under at the time they apply.
- To be considered for the program, students must be academically strong and have demonstrated a commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.
How to apply & closing dates
Applications for study at the University of Pretoria in 2023 are fully online.

Application for admission to undergraduate study programmes for both South African and international citizens close on specific dates in the year preceding the year of study.
Check the list of closing dates supplied below to make sure that you submit your application on time.
To use the Online Application System you will need internet access, as well as an email address that you can access regularly, because as soon as you submit your online application, a student number (EMPLID) will be sent to this email address as confirmation of receipt.
Receiving a student number (EMPLID) does NOT imply that you have been accepted by the University of Pretoria yet. Admission is a separate process that your application undergoes after being evaluated by the relevant faculty.
Mastercard Foundation offers a full scholarship to students who have applied for and been admitted to one of the following programmes at the University of Pretoria:
Postgraduate Study Programmes
- Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences
- Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences
- Faculty of Humanities for entry into the BPolSci (Political Studies or International Studies only)
Honours and Masters degree applications will be accepted in the fields of Engineering (continuing students only).
